Unhappy Sentra problems

I just got an 87 Nissan Sentra Coupe 5speed manual. before I bought it I knew it needed a tune up so I put new plugs and wires in and air filter. I still need to do an oil/filter change, distributor cap and rotor, and fuel filter and PCV Valve.. dont know what else for the tune up, im just getting to know about cars.. anyway

I was driving home from work today and I was going down a curvy hill, and all the sudden my car is jumping like I wasn't giving it enough gas after letting the clutch out, and then all the sudden the car shut off and my battery light came on, So I pulled over, and I turned the key all the way off, and I checked the connections and they were fine. So I turn it back on and it starts up but kinda fluttered as it did and then idled fine. So I took off and get about a half mile and starts doing it again. Then I just waited alittle bit before starting it again. and It did it 2 more times before I finally got home. Any thoughts or Ideas to check besides the distirbutor cap, rotor, alturnator. fuel filter.

One other thing, i bought a PCV Valve but I can't tell if the item I found on the car is it or not because they dont match, the one on the car is an L shape and its like a plug, the one that I bought is straight and it has threads. I also have the Chilton Manual and its not to helpful for the PCV Valve Issue.

P.S. I am really a NEWBIE when it comes to cars but I can understand alot of it.

Well, I just finished replacing the Distributor Cap and Rotor, Seems to be running much better I had just drove it down my 3 mile hill, (not the one it shut off on) and I drove it right back up.. it didn't studder or anything, but my oil leak still remains a problem. Which is this weekends' Project, and if I have enough money I will check the oil plugs and seals and gaskets and replace them as well.

I still have the problem with the PCV Valve.

Would anyone think that the PCV Valve could be different than the one that the auto supply place has for the 87 Sentra?? (keep in thought that the one that is on it right now is an "L" shape, and fits like a plug, and the one they sold me is straight and is threaded?) Does anyone think that I may need a newer Sentra model PCV Valve? or any idea??

i would check with a nissan dealership if you are in doubt. i've auto store pcv valves on my 200 before, and they looked exactly like the one that came off.

I would take the one you think is the PCV valve off and shake it. If it rattles then stick it back in and take the one you bought for a refund. If it doesn't shake then that THAT one to the store and match it up with another one like it. All resources I've found say that all motors avalible in 86, 87, 88 have the screw in type PCV valve. However this may not matter because the PO might have broke it and modified it to accept a standard ford or chevy type PCV valve. Welcome to the world of cars my friend... Always expect the unexpected and NEVER take what the book says as 100% 'cause you never know when some grease slingin mokey brained butt crack showin ninkempoop of a "mechanic" has jacked something up so horrifically that even it's mother wouldn't recognise it.

Well, I already know that the PCV valve that I bought does not fit, It is threaded unlike the one that is on there. I will take some pictures and see if I actually found the PCV Valve, Im pretty sure it is, because its the only thing I have found on it the looks like one.

I know not to believe everything I hear and only half of what I see or Vice Versa. Including reading.

Thx guys I will post pictures soon. maybe late tomorrow night.
