I'm looking at buying an 87 Pulsar with the 16V engine, 5spd, and 179K miles. It's a very clean car and I can probably get it for about $500.
The problem with this car (and reason for my follow up questions) is that it will not stay engaged in 5th gear. All other gears feel solid under accelleration but it will pop right out of 5th gear shortly after releasing the clutch.
1) Is this type of failure common?
2) Could it be something other than a stripped gear? eg. in need of some sort of
adjustment.
3) How difficult would a tranny swap in this car be?
4) Would it be better to have it repaired/rebuilt?
5) Any idea on costs involved?
6) Would it be worth if to buy this car only to have to turn around and fix it?

Hello dennis, welcome to the nissan forums
5th gear pop out is verry common on these cars, it is caused by a worn out engine mount, and the 5th gear hub and syncros get worn out.
If you are looking at a 16 Valve 1987 pulsar I think it would be the CA16DE engine, which is not very comon. The transmission swap is not very difficult, but to find one might be a little more difficult. The 5th gear can be repaired, by buying a new 5th gear assembly which includes the Gear, hub, and synchro.
I would say the car would be only worth a few hunders dollars if everything else was in decent shape

Bob,
Thanks for the welcome.
It sounds as tho the 5th gear assembly is the way to go. I'd assume it will still require removal of the tranny which is no big deal. I doubt it, but can the tranny be removed without removing the engine or do they come out as a package deal?

I have never pulled a tranny from a CA16DE personally, but the other engines and transmissions that came in the pulsars, you can pull the trans seperatly.
You might not even have to pull the transmission to replace the 5th gear parts, if you remove the inner fender well plastic splash guards, but I am unsure on the CA series transmissions. It has a Hydraullic clutch right?

I believe it does have a hydraulic clutch but not 100% certain. I will verify that the engine/tranny combo is what you're thinking it is before exploring the possibilities further. No sense going off on a tangent if it's not the combo you're thinking of.
I'll see what I can find out in more detail and post the specifics here. Now that I know what I'm looking for, it shouldn't be too dificult to verify the information. Is there anything else I should look for as far as identifying the engine/tranny combo? I would assume that it's coded in the VIN...correct?
In any case, if it can be done without pulling the tranny, that would be a win-win situation for me.
Thanks

On the firewall on the passenger side of the engine compartment there is a plaque that states the engine code as well as the displacement in cc's, which on a 1987 should be either a E16I, or E16S, or CA16DE 1.6Litre, both the E16 engines are 8 Valve single overhead cam, while the CA16 is a twin cam 16 valve engine.

I'm definately certain of the CA16 engine...no mistaking the red engine top and "twin cam 16V" lettering. Was there more than one offering of a 5spd tranny with that engine?

Not that I know of, just the one with Hydraullic clutch.
Her is a little info that you might find useful 5th Gear compatability
I know it isn't for your speciffic transmission, but It might give you an idea where to start

You've definately given me a lot of info with which to start. It doesn't seem as though there would be TOO much problem driving at highway speeds in 4th gear for a while given the gear ratios for 4th are pretty close. It may rev a little higher, but considering my MB revs at about 3200 at 60mph, it wouldn't seem that much different to me! haha
Any thoughts at driving in 4th until the 5th gear assembly can be replaced?

Well, I am not 100% sure on this, because My 5 speed had another problem as well. It had worn out roller bearings in the diffrential, which eventally came apart, and chewed up the inside of my trans. I have also heard of people driving it for years without any problems, just not using 5th.
My transmission had a very loud gringing/ howling that was the worn out bearings, which I have never heard of anyone else having
If I had to guess I would say you should be alright driving it for a while

I would think so as well. There were no other sounds coming from the tranny and everything else seemed tight...with exception to a clunking exhaust (minor fix).
