Question e-series has broken bones

Hey,
My father's 85 sentra has started to make some funny noises over the past couple of days. He sais that when you start it, it makes a "popping" noise. He sais that it makes the same noise when you decelerate, but not when you accelerate. It has also started to leak massive amounts of oil from the rear main.

He sais that it is either a broken crankshaft in the rear main area, or the flywheel has come loose. Any thoughts on this?

Also, did the e-series come in any other displacements? In other words, If it turns out to be the crankshaft, could we pick up some displacement by switching to another bottom end? I know that honda and mitsubishi got several different displacements out of the same engine by using different cranks and bores, don't know if nissan did anything like this though.

Thanks,

Nah, the 85 already has the long stroke engine in it (E16). They didn't go any larger.

The e16 is actually a pretty long stroke engine already. That's why it has such excellent low-end torque.

Yea, I love the little noise maker, but you never can have too much power! And if your gonna replace the bottom end anyway....

By the way, we checked the flywheel and the converter last night and they are both in good shape, so it's looking like were gonna have to dig into the engine. I rode with him last night and it sounds more like pieces are flying around in there than just a popping noise.

Thanks,
