it was my uncle's car then he gave it to my sister and i did a headgasket, timing belt, thermostat, water pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, exhaust manifold gasket, down pipe gasket, new muffler, new belts, new seals, new axles (both sides) and new tires, bleed the brakes, and gave it an alignment. My sister drove it for approximately 30-40k miles. Then she sold it to my cousin because he needed a car to get around. Now, two years later, he gave it back to me because he crashed it.
I removed the passenger lower control arm, knuckle, axle, wheel, and will soon replace the oil pan. The bellhousing has a big crack where the front engine mount is holding. I need to get new ball joints on both sides, passenger inner tie rod boot, lower control arm, knuckle, axle, wheel, and oil pan
I have a few questions, there is a Smell of fuel when fueling up. maybe some seals are bad?
The car irratically/randomly dies or does not idle properly and will try to idle at 100-300 rpm.
This car ain't the prettiest thing however it is VERY FUN to drive.
Any suggestions on how to fix these two problems would be great.
Also how do i figure out which engine i have in the car and dropping in a TURBO engine would be FUN.

Look uder the hood there is a plaque with the engine code stamped on it, you probbaly either have the E16s, or the CA18DE.
If it is single cam carbureated it is the E16s, and if it is twin cam with the ECCS multi port fuel injection then it is the CA18DE.
As for the fueling up smell of fuel do you mean it leaks from under the fender? Sometimes the hose that connects the filler to the tank gets cracked.
Depending on what engine you have in your car is what you will need to look at for the idling problem.
Do a search for "Idling problem", there are many things that have been covered on this subject for each engine.

I found the plaque under the hood and it says E16I but the 'i' looks like a j so it sorta looks like E16j which i assumed was an i. i've seen the 's''s at the junkyard so im guessing its gotta be a i.

Ok so It is a E16I
Have you fixed the idle problem?
The TBI version of the E16 is almoast identical to the GA16I, the Idle up, FICD, and AAC solenoids usually need to be cleaned in order to stabilize the idle.

the idle problem is still there. i tried doing a search for solenoids but nothing really came up for cleaning them. how would one go about of cleaning these?

I did a really nice write-up on the GA16I solenoids, and I think the E16I is very very similar, if you go to www allnissans com and check out the GA16i section it is the stickey entitled "The GA16I sensor How To thread"
