CV boot replacement

How difficult is it to replace a passenger side CV boot on an E16S automatic 85 Pulsar? My boot split and slung grease everywhere under the car. When I get up to highway speeds I can hear a whirring noise from the passenger side. The car makes no noises when driving in the city, just on the highway and even then it doesn't always make noise, just sometimes. Anyway, I know if I don't get the boot replaced the CV joint will end up going bad but I don't know exactly what needs to be done to replace it. The Pulsar book I have is vague about that repair. Well, actually the book is very descriptive about everything as long as you have an 87-90 Pulsar. The book doesn't have much detail for Pulsars that were made before 87. I don't know if this is something I could do myself or if I would have to pay someone. In the meantime is it possible to pull the boot back without actually removing it and clean any muck out of there and regrease it. Would that be a good idea to hold it over until I can get the boot replaced. If so what grease should I use in there?

Unhook the CV axle from the hub, and cut the tabs holding your boot over the axle. Then just slide the old one off... not too difficult. I would suggest using axle grease... I assume that is what is used there. If you do not change the boot, the current grease will dry out and cause serious problems.

Well I finally got under the car and cleaned all the gunk out around the boot and inside the wheel. The boot is perfect. There isn't a crack in it anywhere. I don't know where all that grease came from. Any ideas what else would cause that much grease to be all around the boot and somewhat inside the wheel? I'm not sure what the noise was I was hearing. It doesn't happen all that often especially if I stay below highway speeds.

possibly rack & pinion... you might want to check the tie rod boots as well. Are you sure it is grease and no oil or just grime?
