If left to its own, my automatic will shift to top gear at a VERY low speed.... maybe 25MPH? I often put it in "2" just so it will get to 38-40MPH before I shift to "D". I don't remember it doing this back in the good old days- used to drive with a lead foot and wind it up a bit before it would shift. Is it just responding to the 'old lady' input? Or is there some module that might be 'round the bend? 83 Sentra, 90k miles.... thanks. BTW, the car could use a total tune-up: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, et al... but it's getting 35MPG and I hate to mess up a good thing. Of course, too much gas causes it to ping merrily, hence the soft gas pedal activity.

I was going to ask if it shifts early if you go WOT...but if its pinging when you open up the throttle then sounds like you do have problems.....possibly to much carbon buildup.
Could be grandma driving syndrome

Absolutely... and this is just the car for developing it. I figure the trans is merely responding to the minimal accel. input and is shifting at whatever time it sees as optimal.... great for mileage, bad for backing up traffic when leaving a red light. But, again, it's the commuter special!

U R correct. However, Iwould get the pinging issue fixed asap, lest you be unable to dodge the roadrager behind you. Although, if you let them bump you to your destination, you'll get even better mileage!
