82-83 Distributor

Anyone have an '82-83 distributor they'd like to sell? I'm not sure what's causing my car not to fire, but I'd like to start by taking the computer out of the equation.

***** How many do you want? The same guy who gave you the swap idea, is also the one who has them! Now that I think about it, I am probably the only one on the boards who has a fully modified race E16, and needed to ditch the ecu. Hence, the '82-'83 distributor trick. Let me know, Una. Same price as the ECU. Cheers!

***** Yes, because the ECU needs that input [from the orig. dist] for it to control the mixture ratio feedback system to your electronic carburetor. You would probably pass a static idle emissions test, but would fail the new testing procedure that uses a chassis dyno simulator. NJ uses a sytem like this right now.

And I think that's assuming you go with a non-computer controlled carb, because the stock carb won't even know the engine is running without the original distributor. It'd be doubtful that it'd even run.

Ok, so the distributor arrived today. It works! What's even more amazing to me, is that the carb seemed to work pretty well too. No idle of course, but good enough to run around the block real quick.

***** OK then, want to know how to make it idle now? The ecu supplies the ground to the fuel shut-off solenoid [on the driver's side of the chokeless carb]. Simply snip the black wire, and run your own ground wire to anywhere on the engine, [carb mounting stud works fine]. You now have an idle.

***** Thank you Ricebox. I have many years of tinkering/modifying Sentras and Datsun 210's.

Want to know what today's project is? I have the dubious honor of pulling the engine in my brother's '87 B12 wagon. You see, the story I got was that his wife was driving it, and it started to shake and make loud noises. I towed it home, put a 19mm socket on the crank, and you guessed it, the engine's locked up. I can see two holes in the side of the block, and the oil pan is all bent up. It had plenty of oil in it too. My question is: How do you blow up a perfectly good stock E16? Some people never fail to amaze me.

I'm beginning to think these E16's have some kind of random catastrophic oil loss problem, That's the 3rd E16 I've seen/head of seized up in the past month or so. And I had a friend a few years ago that seized his. Odd.. Thanks for the carb trick, I figured it just wasn't idling because the idle kicker wasn't there anymore. I'll give that idle solenoid a try though. Unfortunately I'm out of town for the weekend though, so it'll be Monday before I can try. I'll let ya know how it goes. Thanks.

Ok so I won't pass the emissions thing if I get a distributor that isn't controlled by the computer... well first of all, what year do I get the distributor from and what do I do to hook it up? Is it difficult?? What I wanted to do was convert to EFI using the 91sentra wiring harness so that I would still be able to pass because EFI puts out mucho low emissions.. Hopefully my scheme would work, what do you guys think? Throw me a bone here

You HAVE to have the newer style distributor to run the factory EFI, it needs the crank angle sensor to know where the engine is at and when to fire the injectors. Also the 91 Sentra has a different engine, I don't think it would work at all with an E series engine anyways.
You could always convert the car to run off propane, and never have to worry about an emmissions test again.
