I'm just putting up my thoughts, and am interested in hearing what everyone else thinks. I am very open-minded, so if you can prove me wrong or otherwise convince me, I will take it as a learning experience. That is why I joined this forum, to learn.

the drifting that you guys are talking about in real racing is not drifting. its over steer. they are two different things. the sport of drifting will never be a real " race" because it is not based upon times laps or finishing, its based upon style, power of the drift ect.
the only time when drifting is faster is on dirt or off raod in rally style racing where you need to keep power on through the turn. drifting on a road course during a race gets you passed not faster
Drifting as a skill that helps hold over all speed is just that, another skill that some drivers can use to get better lap times, i've seen this in real life raceing on speedvision, It does have it's penalties though, tire wear is the #1, I watched a F-1 qualifing lap on that Shumauker(mispselled i know) was sideways on 3 TIGHT switchbacks, and he qualified almost 2secs faster than everyone else taking the pole, but the next day when i watched most of the race, not once did he go sliding! i think it was because of tire wear, he wanted to last longer with a few faster laps but not be in the pits every other lap. IS drifting a SKILL that can help you shave a few miliseconds of a singlr lap, I say YES, is drifting something that will help you win and endurance race, NO, you will be in the pits every 3rd or fourth lap.
Also remember most FWD pro racer use a for of drifting to swing the car around really tight corners, is that the same as DRIFTING, no, but it is a form of a drift.
And just to clearify something, anytime that all 4 tire lose traction, but you stay in control, it IS drifting, doesn't matter what type of drive line you have.
And, this is my opinion based on my time in japan and pro races i have watched on tv.

There are high speed drifts and then there is drifting for style.
When the drift king first started drifting he was actually racing in autocross or another type of race. He actually won every race in a season by drifting.
Now I don't know if he was just that much faster on the straight aways of if the drifting was the cause for him to pull to the front of the pack each time.
I doubt that his car was that much faster than all the others.
As for the original question I think that high speed drifting in races through certain corners is still racing but, as for events like D1 they are more like motorsports.
Can you imagine if there was a whole group of cars in a race all drifting and one spins out how many car it would take out that weren't able to change they're trajectory(sp) in time. Would be fun to watch though
IIRC, Tsuchiya was successful w/ using drifting in real racing by gaining position during turns by using drifting. This would let him take a different line to get around competitors during the corner...
