It's figure skating for cars. While it requires talent and skill, in the end it's just for show and isn't a real sport, being scored instead of timed.
So no, it isn't true motorsport, and I don't like it, but I can't condemn people for going out and having fun doing it. Not my cup of tea, but whatever floats your boat.
It's definatley not race, but I can't say that it's totally rice either. Sure, there are the fan boys who come out because it's the latest fad, buying up "Haichi Rokus" and driving the market, but I'm sure in a few years the trend will pass and we'll be left with a core group of people who enjoy this and have no illusions and misconceptions about it.

My hope is that they graduate into real road racing. Road racing in america sucks and it needs fresh blood.

Well,
Drifting is decidedly not a sport, its an art.
Its like comparing breakdancers to marathon runners. Both require extreme talent and skill, and both have rounds with processes of elimination, but it aint exactly sport.
i like it because it makes you become more intuned with your car. no its not exactly racing, but it does take more skill than alot of other motorsports, yes it is motor sports(its in a car which has a motor). yes there are alot of wannabe's but the wannabes turn into then next pros because they want to be the next pros. so dont rag on people trying to learn the sport, atleast they are trying. and cars are cars are cars. we love cars right? thats all that matters, doesnt matter what you do w/ cars as long as there are cars involved. imho i love drifting *steps off soap box*
I'm sorry, but how does drifting require more skill than other motorsports? Different skills yes, more skills, no. It takes a lot of skill to make your way around a track as fast as possible, even if you're only dodging cones.
