NASCAR is something I'd consider a stupid motorsport. Hell, I wouldn't even call it a motorsport.
Drifting is new on these shores, but I've seen the craze elsewhere in the world. I don't consider it a sport really. As Mike said, I see it more as a form of "figure skating" in the world of motorsports. I don't see drifting as an entry level point, from where people advance to other kinds of competitions. You don't see a figure skater advancing to speed-skating in the Olympics, do you?
WRC, F1 racing, JGTC, etc. are the kinds of competitions where true driver skills are displayed.
My 2 cents.

drifting takes alot more skill than driving in a circle for 4 hours while rednecks get drunk and hope for crashes. it seems like alot of people posting on this thread have fwd cars. I understand if you dont like it, but understand it before you critisize it.
I Totally agree on the NASCAR. it could be done away w/ and i wouldnt shead a tear. i respect drifters, NASCAR....well yes it is fast and takes for ever but cmon guys , 100-300 miles of circles?
No doutb, drifting takes a lot of skill and it does look very cool when its done. I too think of it as more of an artform than a motorsport. There is no solid way, that I know of to determine who is the winner in drifting casue many people have different opinions on what looks cool and what doesn't. In motorsports there's no argument, fastest time wins. Just my 2 cents

As someone who has actualy raced on a high speed oval track, I disagree. I mean I hate NASCAR, its like the WWF of racing but it takes more courage and skill to go fast on a very fast oval in tight traffic than in road racing or or any other motorsport I have been in so far.
Drifitng takes a lot of skill also but the consequnces of screwing up are not as high.
Mike

I'm one of those people that just got introduced to drifting within the last year. I've always liked taking my car sideways but never knew that there was real competitions for it. Hell it just rained here tonight and i took my work van (astro) out and was sliding around corners for bout 45 minutes.
I don"t know if drifting is an actual sport but i do know that it takes alot of skill to do and I have mad respect for the pros.
If I had the money to do it I would already be trying to work my way into professional drifting. Just a pipe dream though.

You should listen to your own advice...
Have you ever been strapped in a car for 4 hours doing 180+ in traffic? I'ts not as easy as it looks..
I used to look down on NASCAR as well, but a couple years ago I had the opportunity to go to the Race school at California Speedway and drive the equvilent to a Busch Series car (one step down from Winston Cup cars). After driving at around 150mph for 20+ laps I was exhausted and that was with only 5 cars on the track and spaced out.. I have a new found respect for those guys doing 185-200 in traffic for 200+ laps...
Regradless of the "redneck" past or following..., no doubt in my mind that those guys are skilled drivers with a ton of courage.

what a contridiction ...
So you respect guys that slide around circles for a few laps but not guys that race around them at 180 for hours..
