grinding or not i think primer is a good idea. are u gona rattle can it? or use a professional sprayer?
You can buy spray on adhesive remover that works quite well, and it will not affect the paint either. They also make a rubber eraser like wheel that you put on a drill that will take adhesive and pin striping off. Kinda dissolves as you go and will take the glue right off.

you would need to be carefull with that tho, dont go to fast or you will burn through the clear coat

I think I am going to have to go with that idea I took all the 18 yr. old stickers off my car and the pin striping and it is leaving glue like a mofo. Good thing was I was able to use a razorblade safely to take it off because it wouldn't go past the glue.

im using a professional sprayer and yes i know that you have to sand the car down, but i was trying to sand that glue off but it takes a year and a half plus it took it down to the bare metal sometimes.

I have used it to remove pinstripes before, using a cordless drill on a low speed it was fine. If he is planning on repainting his car, getting all the glue off is the main concern really. Using a razor blade usually just leads to more scratches and more sanding.....
the chemical remover is probably the safest, but either way it is a PITA.
is he talking about the weld cover stuff or what ever its called?. i don't know if your into this but i was think if you painted the door jams a different color but it went with the car (like brakes and interior pieces were the same color) it would look really cool

ehh... or it might look really cheap and ghetto. I know too many people who have "made up for not taking the time to do a good paintjob" by matching their mismatched jams with other pieces. It looks horrible.
