i was wondering what you guys would suggest i use to clean up my engine compartment (under the hood). I have a 2002 SE-R spec v, but im sure the type of car doesnt matter, i just put it there just in case. Also, how much would a pro detail, in and out cost me?? (and does the pro detail clean under the hood?) thanks.
mainly, pros use a pressure washer for mostly everything non-electrical. ust be sure to put a plastic bag an alot of tape over what you dont want to get wet.
another way, is some engine degreaser, and a metal/boar/plastic bristle brush, depending on the material, will help alot, just dont use exess.
im pretty sure you can use armor all, for the plactic and hoses, but i would think that it would collect a ton of grit n grime considering its a greasy type of stuff.
hopefully you find something that works for you!

I personally use industrial degreaser that you are supposed to water down 10 to 1, but I use it at almost full strength, let it sit for about 5 min and wipe it off, and scrub whatevers left, it makes the engine look new. I wouldn’t recommend armor-all because it attracts dirt,
And yeah professional detailers will usually only spray it down with a pressure washer…that is unless you get into the 250-300 dollar range then they often will scrub it all down, but they will also clean all your interior down to the inside of your airvents and make it look almost new. I used to be a professional detailer so you could always take it to me

Detailers here charge 25 bux to steam clean/dry and shine the whole engine bay. and guarantee thier work.
Those guys love to use Armour All...which is the worse thing you can possibly use... it turns everything black into a dull brown after a short time.. nasty.
Unfortunatly there is no easy way to have a clean engine bay other than getting in there and getting dirty.
I usually cover all the electronics with plastic bags with rags inside them for added protection. Then hit it with the lower pressure at the drive in car wash.. usually the spot free selection, two reasons.. less pressure and soft water. Then take soft brushes and scrub everything you can reach.. hit it again with the water... wipe everything down.
One product I really like is CD2 Engine Detailer, I usually hit it with about a half a can afterwards...
Then wipe everything down once again.. let dry... then clean all the silicone hoses with alcohol swabs.. then hit my polished metal parts with polish..
To have an nice engine bay it takes just as much time or more than the normal exterior.

completly true!
i havnt heard of cd2 engine detailer..
but yeah onece i bought an 88 ford escort the engine had never been cleaned so it had a good approx. .25 up to .5-.75 of a centimeter in some places on old baked on oil.
i use the same trick with the plastic bags but i got that engine looking great however in the end the engine was alot cleaner than i was lol,
for stubborn grease and all one thing that ive also been told really works is the areosol oven cleaner, not the no-fume type but the generic el-cheapo stuff
yeah i dont touch armor all ive seen it screw up peoples interior, what i kindof like is "black magic" it seems to work superb.
i cover some electrical with the plastic bags and also roll up some paper towels and put them in my spark plug holes. spray everything with this cleaner called awesome and scrub down what needs to be, rinse, then spray with Gunk Foamy Engine Brite and then rinse again. i usually let the car run for a little bit with the hood open after im done just to dry itself. my engine bay isnt as clean as mike's but its not so shabby
I usually don't have a very greasy engine bay. I keep up with it, so there's never really any problem.
Before a show, I'll usually blow out all the excess sand/dirt with compressed air or such, any greasy or dirty parts like the resovoirs get scrubbed with your common household de-greaser, dirty painted/powdercoated objects get wiped down with car wash wipes, and I finish off all rubber and plastic with Armor-All wipes for that shiny look. The Armor all doesn't last very long, but it keeps it shiny for the show.
instead of the armor all, I used to use silicone spray lube/protectant. spray it on the hoses and wipe it off after about 5 min so there's no greasy buildup.
when the engine gets dirty, I use gunk engine brite and an old toothbrush to scrub down anything messy- power steering reservoir and around the oil cap, stuff like that... simple green works just as well.
the one major issue is DO NOT GET THESE CLEANERS ON YOUR EXTERIOR PAINT! If you do, re-wax that area as any type of degreaser will strip the wax off and dull your paint.
that was my old one that I totalled 4 yrs ago.. now I could care less what it looks like as long as it's fun to drive.. I don't even have pics of the engine bay unless I was doing a writeup for installing a mod or something.
