Shifters

Hi, I have an 04 SE-R in "autotragic" and I was wondering if there was anyway to change the shifter. There are some nice ones at Southwestautoworks.com but they said that :

All shifters listed do not fit on any Nissan gated shifters (as found on 2002-2003 Nissan Maximas, 2002-2004 Nissan Altimas, 2004-2005 Nissan Maximas, and some 2002-2003 Nissan Sentra SE-Rs).

So what the hell is a gated shifter? Is there anyway to get the stock shifter off? Has anyone done this? Know of any better looking shifters? Thanx

Sentras, gated or not

Some of the new Sentras are gated and some are not. The gate is a short plastic wall that protrudes vertically from the shifter housing underneath the console next to the shifter. The Maxima is the only model that actually utilizes the gate. On the Maxima, to shift in reverse, you must depress the shift lever. The gated housing is sometimes found on Altimas and Sentras but isn't used. The Nissan Motorsports shifter can be used on these models. The directions explain how to cut the unused gate off. You'll get a 46% reduction in throw.
