Red face Check Engine light

My Check engine light is on.
And the car won't rev, I'm currently getting a max of 50kmph.

My mech says I should replace my MAF Sensor for around 450$. I have tried cleaning it (used a carb cleaner) but to no avail.

Is there any other reason why the check engine light would be on ?
Why did cleaning the sensor not work ?

I'd need more info to be sure, but it sounds like a MAF to me. Sometimes they break, and cleaning doesn't always work. It's an electronic part. Do you clean your motherboard if your computer breaks?

if you can get it by a Auto Zone, they will scan it for you so you will know for sure...

if while driving you cannot go past ~2k rpms then your car is in safe mode. do as suggested and get the code read. that will assist in helping to troubleshoot your issue

Of course he would say that, especially if he was pulling ideas out of his ass. Did he/she happen to mention a diagnostic code or whether or not he used a code scanner of any type to come to that conclusion?

Only about 10,000 or more other reasons... But most won't limit your engine rpm's or necessarily cause the engine to act up negatively.

Why WOULD cleaning the sensor work? If a wire broke internally, why would cleaning that broken wire clear the malfunction? If I smashed the MAF into tiny bits with a sledgehammer, would cleaning the MAF sensor bits and pieces make it work again? Sure, cleaning the MAF has worked for some people (including me), some of the time, but it's not a 100% 'be all end all' solution every time...
