hey guys. having some problems with my car. did a search and it looks like people had the same problem and changing the alt was the solution. i tried the same but no luck the car wont charge. It's been a month long problem, help please. History of my problem is about a month ago I drive my car to the train station no problems. get back at the end of the day and the car is totaly dead. jump it, let it charge and drive it home. charge the battery that night the next morning its dead again. The battery was changed about a year ago when i had other electrical issues. wiring harness was rubbing and shorting out in the fender. so i didnt think it was the battery. Changed the alt because a friend had the same car and thats what his problem was. So i put alt #1 in battery light comes on right away and is only putting out 12 volts. ok figure bad alt again. Alt #2 put it in lights go away and its putting out 14 volts. its fixed or so i thought. drive the car for 2 or three days no problems then the lights start to get dim trans slips car dies. luckily on my road so i could push it home. no lights came on checked the alt not putting out a charge. voltage is the same as the battery and slowly drops when running. Alt #3 i get from a different place thinking that might help. it didnt. put it in the battery light and parking brake light are on the alt is putting out any voltage. its the same as the battery and drops slowly as the car runs. my friend seems to think its a short somewhere thats causeing it not to charge but where do i start to look. could it be i got 3 bad alts? please help the car is a 2000 gxe 1.8 with 110,000 miles on it.
I have done this to find a short. Get a 12 volt test light and connect it in series with the positve battery terminal. that means you take off the poitive battery terminal and place the light to the pos terminal and the other end of light to the actual pos wire, if there is a short or somthing is turned on it will light , so make sure eveything is off, if it still lights start pulling fuses till it goes out. When it goes out that will be the line that the short is in and you can seach it out down the line. Chiltons has some pretty good schematics to fallow where wires go to.
