B&M short shifter rattling

Hey I know a lot of ppl have the B&M SS in their B14s, I am wondering if anyone else has this problem.

anytime I am cruising at 2500 - 3000 RPMs (which is a lot of the time), or while I am at idle, my B&M responds with a metallic rattle. I have checked everything on it, both above and below the pivot ball. The bolt connecting it to the shift rod is secure, and I've checked everything accessible from the cabin... Sounds almost like there is something small and metallic loose inside, and it resonates w/engine vibrations at the above RPMs. Grabbing the shifter is the only thing that makes it stop. Anyone else experience or fix this before?

ive heard that w/ some other B&M's that the rattle is due to lack of adequate lubrication on all the pivot joints.

it's due to the solid construction of the pivot ball and the shaft. the oem one uses a delrin ball, or something softer than steel. that thing is also common with UUC motorwerks SS shifters i install on BMW's. just try to lube it up, it won't completely get rid of it, just dampen.

I know people with the Stillen short shifter, which is also a total replacement of the pivot assembly. Any idea if the Stillen does this too? I am considering changing to the Stillen if I can't get rid of the rattle.

Straight from Http://www.sentra.net/tech/garage/drivetrain.php

"The stillen shifter has been known to have a slight rattle which can be cured by liberally greasing the shifter ball occasionally."

Talk about a surgically precise answer to my all of my short shifter questions... Thanks colonel.

I prefer the shorter throw of the B&M over the Stillen (although the B&M seems taller by comparison). So, I will just have to disassemble the thing to get some grease around the pivot ball, as mentioned above as well. Thanks for all of your suggestions!

Last I heard it was the knob that rattled and that sound slike it might be the case here, as it stops when you hold the shifter. Swap it out and see...

Thanks, wes, but that was the first thing I checked. If my Nismo knob rattled after paying as much as I did, I wouldve been pissed.

simply holding the shifter doesn't stop the rattling, I need to grab it enough to damp the engine vibrations being transmitted through the shift rods.

LMAO I figured you probably had tried it..... Slap a ton of grease all over the pivot ball and see if it goes away....
