I just got back from the shop that did the tranny fluid & filter change.
The mechanic said that there was a lot of metal shavings in the bottom of the pan.
I guess ill have to rebuild my tranny too ofcourse it sucks cause i blew the engine about 3 weeks ago and they swapped another motor in..and now this
The rebuild is projected to cost somewhere between $1,500-$1,800. That said, I got a lucky break. A family friend owns the transmission shop here, which is supposed to be the best in town. I am getting the rebuild for $1,200, for which I am extremely grateful! If all goes well, I will have my car late tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise on Thursday. They have all the parts they need to complete the job except for a new torque converter. That part is supposed to arrive sometime today. My fingers are crossed. Also, I have to assume that no other issues will surface as they put everything back together again. I am holding out a great deal of hope that the best case scenario occurs. More updates will follow.
By the way, does anybody know if a rebuilt transmission has a break in period, like a new or rebuilt engine has? If so, what is recommended? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
don't rebuild it, waay too much, it shouldn't cost more than $500 if you play your cards right. Kinda pisses me off now b/c when I parted out my car, I decided to just trash my Auto tranny. I figured no one would want a 1.6L Auto transmission. Only 48k too.
SO anyway, check the junk yards, check ebay, check the classifieds, you're very likely to find someone parting out a working transmission for around $300. Then find a friend or small shop to so the installation for around $150.
Oops! Actually, I'm a little late to abort now. The car is finished and ready to pick up. Believe it or not, I did try to find a used tranny here, but in this area (East Central Indiana), they are somewhat hard to come by. Sadly, most people here drive GM/Ford and there are fewer Nissans than in other places. There was one tranny available for $500, but it had well in excess of 100K miles on it, so that wasn't worth it (mine died at 105K with no abuse). The green light to rebuild was given late last week, so the tranny was taken apart and the necessary parts were ordered. They finished it this afternoon, took it on a test drive and said that all was well, so after my graduate assistant interview tomorrow morning, I'm going to pick my car up. Finally, after two weeks, my car is back from the dead!

damn!!
thats shit load of money
i asked my mechanic he said to install a tranny..for me it would cost about $260 plus the cost of the tranny. I didn't ask him about rebuilding..but..damn...1,200 is way too much. I paid less for my engine and the install.

Yeah, I agree. I paid the $1,200 today and picked the car up on my way back to work from my interview. So far, so good. Plus, I now have a 12 month/12K warranty on the rebuild, which is reassuring. They told me that I need to bring it back to them in 10-15 days for a follow-up inspection (which is free), but otherwise, I seem to be back in business again. Now to get the hoses replaced and radiator flushed. Oh yeah, I need to get the valve cover gasket/spark plug tube seal replaced, too, but those will happen in the next month or so. At least the transmission service is completed (it was also on my to-do list), although it happened in a VERY roundabout, unexpected way! Thanks to everyone for their support and advice over the past couple of weeks. It is most definitely appreciated!
same thing happened to my engine, i was gonna replace it in the summer..but it died on me prematurely . Im going down to the shop again tomorrow so im gonna ask em how much to rebuild my tranny.
