Lightbulb 200 SE alternator/brake warning lights

I have a 1996 200 SE with 98k miles. Recently the alternator and brake lights began flashing when I reached about 50-55 mph and stay on over that. Never at idle or low speed .. it seems to be at high RPM. I checked the belt, applied friction dressing, no relief. Otherwise runs very nice.
I am going to check the POS battery term for corrosion and the grounds and fuse box.
Is this the alternator? or voltage regulator?
The battery is original day one but is not fading and is holding charge. Starts like a charm.
Any ideas out there?

Congratulations on finding NF!! The warning is most likely due you an alternator problem. Take it to Advanced Auto or Auto Zone to run a check on it.

Yesterday I went to Pep Boys and got an alt and a serp belt and a new battery (I had the orig Oct 1996 Nissan) and pulled the alt out. The hard part was that I had to pull the P/S belt and aligning the serp belt was a chore to avoid in retrospect, but it finally worked out OK.
Car runs fine, no pesky lights. The serp belt was cracked a bit. I would advise that if you change the alt then change the $16-17 dollar serp belt as well for insurance. It breaks on the road and you are in a real rut. The battery was OK, but at 8 1/2 years I figger that's good sleeping as well. Now I have to re-set the clock and radio presets.
Happy Nissan buyer .. never buy US again ( and I am in the US OEM supplier employment).
This is a great web-site - it is on favs now.

I had about the same trouble. I ran an amplifier without a capacitor and the battery was dead one morning trying to start it to go to school. I installed a new battery. Then a week later the charge and brake light came one. I installed a new alternator and the lights disappeared. I've installed a voltmeter to monitor the electrical system. I haven't had any problems since. I think the reason that the brake light comes on is something to do with ABS.

No, it's the way the warning system is wired in Nissan .. it had nothing to do with the brakes, it's the alt. and nothing but the alt. I do not have ABS and I had both lights come on. Both are now out.
Now if my brakes actually warn, I may be confused into thinking it's the alt again? In all, I fared better than a Ford Escort owner .. they just trade in the car immediately before the head gasket blows.
