Windshield Wiper Mechanism

Driving to work in the rain yesterday, I heard a pop and then the driver's side wiper stopped wipping. The passenger side wiper still works. I'm assuming that the bar that connects the two broke. Is that a safe assumption? Is this something that I can fix myself or will it require a mechanic or even taking it to the dealer?

Thanks,
Dant

Wipers

You will have to go to the dealer to get the part but the repair can be done by anyone. It isn't too difficult. I replaced one of the bars myself. I have a 97 and there was a recall on this for my year. I found out about the recall after I fixed it.

I have the same thing happened to me today. One of the pivot join of the wiper assembly came loose. It looks like an easy fix.

How much did it cost you for the new part? Can it be fix without buying new part?

Thanks

I had the problem over a year ago but I think the part was in the $20 range. You might be able to just pop it back on but mine looked worn and having your wipers fail in a bad storm can render your car inoperable (I had to leave the car until it stopped raining). Based on the risk of being stuck somewhere I think it is worth the $20 part.

I forget what exact tool I used to put it on but I remember I had to get some leverage so it was either vise grips or channel locks. I think it took me like 1/2 an hr to an hour to fix. I haven't had any trouble since.

Good Luck!

my wiper broke this summer and part cost more from salvage yard than dealer. 15 bucks is what I paid and the part took about an hour to put on. There was one nut holding each wiper arm and some plastic clips for the molding is all.
