i think i let this noise go on too long, as it has gotten louder.
after about a month or so of starting the engine in the morning with a funny rubbing like noise when it's cold, i finally decided to take it in to have it checked. it was just as i predicted...the car needs a new starter.
i know that those are not cheap. would i have to pay the extra money to have it put on or can it be done myself?
Happened to me at 108,000 miles(now I have 164k). I was at Walmart and went to start the car and nothing happened. It had happened like 4 times before that but I would give it a little while and it would start. I don't remember how much the dealer charged. $200 or less. I'm thinking 150ish but it was so long ago.
Never got louder, just would take an extra few seconds. It was retarding.

I don't know how comfortable you are doing your own work, but it's pretty easy. I drove my car up on ramps, there is one bolt you remove from the bottom, and another you remove from the top. There is a bracket near the starter that makes it a bit tricky, but you can remove it if you need to. I was able to swap out the starter without having to.
I'd download the FSM and search NF for more detailed instructions. I was able to get my remanufactured starter for ~$90, and it took me about an hour to replace the faulty one. No problems since, its been about a year. Good Luck!
im just learning to do stuff on my own to the car to save me some money...but im unsure of this one. i don't even know where the starter is located. i know, sounds weird but it's true.

it is easy. its located under the intake manifold, it took me an hour to do. i bought the starter from oreilly's $140 total cost
they're not that bad to change, the auto is worse tho.
Is it just loud or is it not cranking. Mine is really loud, but it hasn't gone bad. For as long as I owned the car, it makes a loud grinding noise when I start it, but it starts fine each time.
i had the same noise, mines is a manual. it had that noise when i first got the car nad it's been progressively gotten worst and noiser.
i attempted to changed it on my own with a kragen rebiult generic[$140]. but couldn't get to the second [top]screw...so my friend recommended this place here around my area. they had original hitachi [both revisions] and the nx2000's mitsubishi rebuilts. it's not as expensive [$110]as the kragen generic one. i got the mitsubishi one install on my 96 20se-r for $162 out the door...took them 1-2 hours. the starter is partially blocked by the EGR frame [?]
i picked hte mitsubishi one because i don't trust the hitachi one eventho the 2nd revision fixed that brushing problem...mitsubishi was cheaper and better design.
i'm at work, if u want to order it from that place i got it, i can post it up later tonight when i get home.

Since you have the GXE like me the starter is in a different place than the 2.0 SER SE guys. The 2.0 is difficult to get to. I know I have changed my Daughters twice!!!!
On the 1.6 manual the starter is on the transmission side not the engine side of the flywheel. SO it is not under the intake. Take a look and see if you can see it, and the attaching bolts heads under the intake. If the Auto is the same I think it will be a lot easier than the comments in the thread.
Good Luck.....
I had to change my starter at 155K after it wouldn't start one day. I noticed that when I turn my car off and try to crank it up again, it wouldn't start. Basically I remanufactured it and reinstalled it...now it starts fine...but I'm noticing that the starter switch is gonna go soon, so I need to replace that too. Does anybody have the installation instructions on changing a starter switch???

Well I have done this on a Toyota and it is not fun. The good news is now that push button starters are in vogue again you can just wire in a push button (one from a 350Z with label ?) This will be cheaper, faster and cool !!!
(Yes my 67 XKE has a push button starter)
