96 Sentra GXE front door lock falling out

The lock cylinder is falling out, just being held in by the linkage inside. I took off the door trim panel and couldn't find a c-clip anywhere that lock cylinders are held with on my other cars.

There's a big metal piece that curves around the lock cylinder with a rubberized coating, designed to fit just around the cylinder. It's fastened to one of the door latch bolts.

Is this the lock cylinder retainer on my Sentra? Just worn after all these years? Or is there supposed to be a c-clip that retains the cylinder against the door?

The factory service manual does not show a detail of the lock. It looks like the front door of the sedan has a lock divorced from the door-opening mechanism (with a rod leading to the door opening mechanism), while the rear door has the lock built into the door opening mechanism.

Try going to a Nissan dealership and ask the parts department to see a detail of the lock on the computer. If they have a lock in stock, they may let you examine it.

Thanks Ishadoff,

I have the shop manual and the Chilton manual too. The shop manual doesn't show anything as you said. The Chilton manual shows a c-clip retainer but the lock cylinder looks a lot different than mine.

I found an old lock cylinder retainer from my 69 Bronco and used it and put everything back together. I'll check at the dealer too, since a couple of the plastic screws for attaching the door panel were chewed up and wouldn't screw back in - hate plastic screws.

I'd appreciate anyone else's input on the stock retainer.
