when im at a stop and i turn my wheel either way i hear and kinda feel a faint fast clicking. this is not my cv joint as i know what that sounds like. any ideas on what part of the steering system this might be? and is there any imediate safty risks? i was thinking maybe its a universal in the collum.

I have a squealing noise when the wheel is turned all the way to one side, if you let up a bit it goes away, but its only when the wheel is all the way to one side.
ok, here are some possible causes of click noises in the steering system:
tie rod ends, particularly the ball joints.
also just about any joints that go on the steering knuckles.
excessive play inside the steering rack, well, this one needs a whole new unit.
and cv joints.
oh, and lets not forget wheel bearings, well that's a worse case scenario kinda thing.
Best way to diagnose this would be to jack it up and try to move the wheel. See what moves and what stays stationary, when you get to a piece with play in it, it's bad. My inner tie rod was clunking over bumps, etc for a while and I just changed it today. Part was $31 and the alignment $45. It is best to fix all loose parts at once before paying for an expensive alignment.
