AC/Air Vents Problem

Hello,
I'm new to the forum, so go easy on me. I drive my girlfriend's '95 200SX. The only problem I've had with it is that I cannot switch which vents blow. No matter which ones i select, air only blows through the defrost vents that blow against the windshield (which does no good with the A/C for me during the Arizona heat). I took apart the center console. The 5-way selector is connected to a cable and sometimes the cable gets stuck and does not want to move, but even when it does, the vent selection does not change. The Haynes and Chiltons manuals and worthless to me. Anyone have any suggestions before I spend a day tearing apart the dash and everything else in it in hopes of finding something? the selector mechanism (where the cable leads to) is under the dash on the driver's side. You should see it to the right of the accelerator above the ECU.

There are 2 lieel arms that move up and down as you select the different vents, make sure they are moving and connected to the cable.
