Noticed this a few months back in the dead cold of winter. Haven't been noticing it because I haven't been driving the car in quite places lately but its still there. The tick is coming from the trip odometer and seems to make the noise every 1/10 of a mile. Has any one seen this, heard of it, have suggestions to prevent breakage? I know both odometers and the speedo are driven by the same gear assembly so I would hate to see
break and leave me without a speedometer, can't afford that. Especially if its something I can prevent now.
I have reset it while moving on a few rare ocassions but know better as I have read those posts here. Maybe my few screw-it moments have caused enough damage that its too late. Did you loose both odometers or just the trip. I would hate to loose the trip but can live without that. I wouldn't be able to let the odo stay broken though. Fighting that with my truck right now and estimating elapsed miles until I can fix it.
Actually if you lose the trip you lose the other odometer as well, the main odometer spins by the trip... I did the same thing a few times, reset it while moving, and it broke... it would make those sounds sometimes too and start to work a few tenths of a mile then stop... like a spring winding in there or something..
So nobody has noticed and found a way to prevent this, just fixed it or lived with it. Too bad, went for a drive last night and now it is starting to sound like a tick-tock. Despair. Guess I'll have to be prepped for when it finally goes. Hell, might work for a few more years if I'm lucky.
