Exclamation SR20 question

I am still having trouble with my engine coping out at 4k and above. It sputters and actually one time shot fire out the exhaust. The thing is, when you go easily on the gas it does not do this.

I have a cheap ebay air filter on my car which may be the problem because i read on se-r.net that the MAF can screw up if the air coming in is too turbulent.

no engine light appears

possible sources of problem:

1.broken driver side header stud (near the copper pipe to go to the manifold)
2.MAF - replaced twice but with used MAF's
3.no velocity stack - i ordered a jwt pop charger so hopefully that will fix the problem

PLEASE HELP

Fire out the exhaust? Sounds like it's running really rich, and/or not igniting properly. Someone else here will have to tell ya how to properly adjust the air:fuel ratio, but check your plugs and distributor and rotor contacts for fouling maybe? Are the plug wires in good shape? I'm just thinkin maybe they're not sparking very well leading to unburnt gas igniting in your exhaust. Just a couple shots in the dark. Check your timing too.

those would be my guesses too, one of your cylinders might be misfiring, check the compression on all 4 cylinders..........if your MAF went out, u would definetaly get a CEL.

Check the cap and rotor, along with the plugs and wires. But my guess is your engine timing. Wouldn't hurt to check it along with the above.

did you by chance remove the body ground near the air filter, (don't ask me how i know that will cause this,) or is the filter sitting on it ? other wise check the cap and rotor, pull your plugs etc, it is ignition or fuel related, the air filter won't shoot flames out the back of the car, it won't even shoot flames without a filter at all. also check o2 sensor if that hasn't been replaced recently, it could cause your car to run too rich, yet still shouldn't shoot flames out the back. another thing to check if it is shooting flames is the cat, look and see if it is glowing from the catalyst being burned up. it wouldn't hurt to hit it with a timing light and see what your ignition timing is set at , but i don't think that is your cause.

It's the header leak. The leak causes extra air to be drawn into the chamber and lean it out, thus causing a lean backfire. I had this problem on a Chevy 350 with a faulty air injection check valve that allowed the same thing to happen. Mine would spit fire through the carburetor and die sometimes too.Fix that, and I believe your problem will be solved.
