Question Weird CEL...help!

My check engine light came on, I pulled the code, and it gave me 5 - 5 (no problems)... I reset the CEL, and it didn't come back for about 3 weeks...

So when it came back, I pulled the code again, got another 5 - 5, and reset it. This time it came back on after about 3 days.

From what I can tell in the manual, the CEL is supposed to be illuminated when the ignition is in the ON position. But mine's not. It doesn't come on until I start the car. I think that's why its not giving me any error codes.

I've also noticed that most of the time it will stay on all the time when I'm driving, but about 1 out of 10 times that I start the car it will randomly flash for quite a while...it seems to flash more when I hit the gas.

Any ideas? This is my last resort before I take it to the shop...

You're turning that screw to read the codes? Here's what I think, that screw odes 2 things, if you turn it a little, it'll read out the code, if you turn it alot, it will reset the computer. You prolly do have a problem, but everytime you go to read the code you're instead reseting the computer and so it's flashing 55. If you can't get it to read out the code, try to find someone with an OBDI/OBDII scanner.

maybe you're getting code 0505, and the mode selector clears the ecu when you go turn it 1 cycle, it'll flash the codes, then clear them when you go the other way.
