Question gas smell when car starts

it was about 105 degrees today. i got into the passenger side of my car to start it (MODIFIED - I can do this without pushing in the clutch) and my car didn't start, it just made a clicking sound. you know that click you get when your battery is dead?? - same sound, but my battery wasn't dead because i rolled down the windows and my subs were hitting..... so anyway, i try again, and same click sound. i go to the driver's seat, and it clicked one more time, then i tried again immediately after and the car started after a slight pause. now guys, tell me what happened here. my starter is 2 months old, i have new spark plug wires (but my spark plugs are 2 yrs old, but iridium), and i have no idea what it could be. not to mention, but sometimes when i start my car, i get a gasoline smell inside the cabin of the car. should i change my spark plugs - could this be it??? any help would be much appreciated, thanks everyone!

you should do a tune up once a year.. to make it run really nice.. especially since you have really hot summers...if its not turning over it might be an altenator.. systems can kill an altanator pretty quick.. but if you are smelling fuel, then u are running rich... and that could be a fuel pump problem, or fuel filter.. it happened to my friends probe...

funny thing is..... i've been through the alternator problem. i got a new one just 2 months ago. i changed my fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor last year, and i have a new flywheel that is 3 months old.... so hmmm.... what is the EVAP? i hope i don't have a fuel pump problem. i'll check the spark plugs in a little bit....

If it doesnt stall out once you get it going I would say its not the fuel pump. Check for leaking fuel lines in case thats where the gas smell is coming from. Otherwise it sounds an awful lot like a bad starter. Do you have one of those autozone rebuilt starters? Sometimes their parts are shitty so you might want to get it checked out.
PS did you disconnect the clutch switch thing so you can start without pushing it in?

i don't think it's my starter, because it was rebuilt by... battery xchange (or something like that). it's only 3 or 4 months old. i checked my spark plugs, and they are still very good, not even black! iridium is awesome! i've had these spark plugs for 2.5 years now I believe, and still nice! So anyway, my car doesn't die on me or anything.... i do have a little problem sometimes though.... when i'm pushing the pedal to the floor, sometimes after i shift into 3rd gear (this is when it usually happens), the car sort of hesitates a little bit like it doesn't get all of the power right away. it happens quite a bit, so i'm wondering what the heck could be causing this. i'll check the egr valve and evap when i get a chance tomorrow to see if there's a problem there.

it could also be your injectors, or ecu reading wrong.. cuz if you get really sluggish that you might stal out, your ecu be reading the wrong thing and dumping too much fuel into the injectors causing your car to run rich...
