bends

mandrel bends vs. crush bends. most of the muffler shops around my town don't have mandrel benders. how much of a horsepower difference will i lose from getting crush bends compared to mandrel bends? could i just go 2 1/4" piping?

mandrel bends will give you smoother exhaust flow.. you wont notice too much of if you dont have many mods... when your increase your mods and you car becomes more high hp you will lose some... if you dont want to redo the exhaust, get mandrel bent or just get a stromung exhaust.. they aren't too expensive.. you gxe are the 2.0 right.. i think 2 1/4" should be a good size..

well i have no idea what a mandrel bender looks like but he says the bender he uses has three shoes that bend the pipe. even if it is 2" crush bent it will still perform better than stock piping right?

I suppose, yeah. Going to try to follow the Project 1.6T Cause 233whp sounds pretty good. Even though mines an auto, oh well, it was cheap and I needed a car that ran good.

ill tell you though, we have a very reliable car.. you can beat it up a lot and will only give you minor problems if any at all.. the nice thing if you follow the project, they aren't even close to being down prolly and that 233whp is with stock internals, no big ignition upgrade and we are finally being recognized as a good car...

i agree it's a great car. to tell you the truth... i don't plan to race my car since it's an auto and thats not really my style. so i would just like to know if 2" crush bent piping will hurt my performance more than help it. exhaust piping is stock right now.

crushed bends are more restrictive and will reduce exhaust flow.. that and alot of muffler shops use crappy materials which would rust.. but if you get crush bends, get 2 1/4 if you go crushed bends.. i would either go with a stromung cat-back or get the mandrel bends....personally i wouldn't go with the bends.. plus unless you know the person doin it, it will be cheap materials prolly..not worth it..

I got a crush done on my '93 (also 1.6). Don't do it. The material was crap and the bend wasn't TOO bad, but it could have been much better. Espically where they go over the axel. Drop the $$ up front and get a good system. I was dissapointed in mine after 1 winter. Espically when there are only 2-3 shops that I am aware of that does "stainless". These guys were supposed to be a good mod shop. After the cost of labor and then getting the muffler and having that put up I could have bought a complete system and just hung it myself. Lesson learned wait and get the best you can afford and do it all @ once. I did it because the stock was broke, but I could have had that repaired really cheap.
