Unhappy 40mph Reverse

Ok so im driving and i go to shift into 4th and i go into reverse..... at 40mph. So there was a horrible grinding noise followed by a horrible smell. Then i couldnt get my car into reverse, there would only be a grinding noise. That was yesterday, today i tried to reverse and there was no problem! I think im gunna go get it checked out, but could it just have been knocked out of alignment and then get back in.... Just thought id post this to see if this has happened to anyone

If it's a manual then it's not physically possible to put the moving car into reverse.

Im logged in as someone else but im the orgignal post writer. I didnt get it into reverse. It just grinded when i TRIED to shift into it. It doesnt help that i still thought it was 4th and tried to jam it in, Obviously it is a manual if i am shifting as well. But now like i said the car drives as if nothing ever happened..... Its bizzare . and i really dont feel like having it looked at, so maybe ill just keep driving and pray my transmission doesnt drop out of my car :-) If anyone knows of a major problem i could hagve caused please tell me.

Flush your fluid to get rid of any "CHUNKS" or shavings. Refill and keep going. If its driving fine you probably only killed a few thousand miles off its life. But hey thats later not right now.......

yeah get that shit flushed.. but.. still.. it is not supposed to do that .. there is a safety mechanism that should NOT allow you to shift into reverse.. but.. hey.. what do i know anymore..

and yeah.. ive gone pretty fast in reverse as well.. its cool.. expessially when jerking the wheel really fast and then putting it into drive.. but.. i dont recomend it to anyone.. its a good way to fry your tranny.. LOL.. Travis

the reason why you couldnt put in reverse for awile is because of the teeth you just shaved off the gear. get your tranny flushed asap. i let mine go after i, had shifted wrong going into third (let the clutch out floored it then shifted in to third, my timing was waaayyy off that day lol.) and for about a block i couldnt get in any gear, after the pieces drifted to the bottom i was able to shift. my tranny blew about three weeks later.

one time i accidentally hit my auto tranny into reverse going 30mph forward. it was like hitting the brakes, except it just screamed tires, and left nice skid marks. not to mention the damn engine stalled, and all the idiot lights came on. i was like "oh fuck, just dropped the trans". luckily it just stalled the engine, and once i realized it was in R i pulled it back to N, so all i needed to do was restart it, and drive away
