Advanced my timing... questions and problems.. expert help plz
Tonight I went ahead and advanced the timing on my 98 200sx SE. I found the instructions in a how-to write up off one of the sites I found on this forum. Well, I had problems with my timing light and couldn't get it working right, so my friend told me we'd do it the way he's always done it, and just advance the timing as far as the dis will turn and then slowly adjust back until the pinging and stuff stops. Well, he slammed it all the way back to the fenderwall, and I hopped in and drove it. It drove and performed GREAT and I could tell a serious difference in my low-end acceleration. The car even runs smoother now. So I've left it fully advanced but I don't know what it's set at because my timing light isn't working right. So what's the most that it is possible to advance my GA16??? Cause that's what it's at. I'm running 93 octane and it's running fine.... I don't hear any pinging or anything. So I'm looking to find out what it's set at if anyone knows beings it's fully advanced.... and what kind of problems could I have from it being this far advanced? Do I need to worry about trying to get another timing light or something?

I'm guessing your ECU freaked out and automatically retarded the timing if you twisted it all the way. If you really want pinging, drive the car hard and see what happens. You are playing w/ fire, it only takes a small about of detonation to ruin your engine, do it right and put it at 15 degrees.

Hey LaRon, where did you get those instructions? Can you give the link plz?.....
hey zeno, are the timing instructions that you posted the same for my GA16? Im just curious cuz the directions mention the factory timing at 15* and I know that the GA16 is factory at 8*..... how do I compensate for this during the process?

Well, I have driven it hard... quite hard last night and also today. It's running better than ever... a friend of mine told me I'd know it if I had detonation though and said that he thinks it's fine. What you guys think?

yes those instructions are the same for your ga. i have my timing set at 19 degrees...i turned it all the way towards the firewall bc i forgot the order of the timing marks and with the distr. all the way back it doesnt even register on the timing marks on the pulley if your gun is at 0...same thing if u retard it completely
hey guys go to sentra.net and look up technical by mike kojima he knows his stuff and too much advance knocks the motor which will murder ur motor...dont do stuff half way cuz u mite regret it...do it rite...so check it and look at other stuff there and a lot questions can be answered....
If you didn't set the ECU to timing lock mode when playing with the distributor, you've effectively done nothing as the ECU will retard timing to attain what it thinks is 8º BTDC.
If you DID achieve timing lock mode, then the ECU will retard timing as much as is needed to get the knock sensor to shut up...unless the distributor is so far advanced timing can't be retarded enough.
