Depends on the type of spring compressor. If you rent one most of them will have instructions.

Its like a clamp. Two claw like finger clamp down on a high coil on the spring. Then two lower claws clamp on a lower coil. Then you tighten up the bolt going through the compressor, and it compresses the spring.
Now you can remove the top nut on the strut and remove the spring with out it shooting out.
You dont really need one, but its recomended. The way we did it, we put a large piece of plywood in front of the spring. Then we loosened up the nut on top and it just shot off into the wood. Yea its a lil dangerous. Also you better make sure you can find all of the parts that shoot off....lol.

It was a lot simpler than i imagined it to be. I dfinetly recommend an air compressor for tightening the spring!!

Be very careful once the spring is compressed... the potential energy is great and if it ever gets loose you can be severely injured. Treat it like a carton of eggs in that condition and attempt to stay as far away from it as possible during installation just in case...

a freind of mine puts a chain through it (the spring)and bolts it down to his work bench too.
