external ignition coil

i need info on how i might convert my distributer to use an external ignition coil. it is for non-performance needs. i have three distibuters sitting at home that are junk because they no longer produce spark. the last one to go out on me left me stranded in chicago, 500 miles from home! i keep buying used ones that set me back $450.00 thats only because the re-built ones are 750.00! i'd hate to see what nissan charges. i figure this could be a weekend project for me. then if my modified dist. goes out i have a back-up. any help or info, from power transister, to modifing the cap, will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
justo

p.s. i have a ga16de in case you didnt know.

have you tried a search on this forum or the sr20 forum? i only ask bc i know that there was a write up about it on one of the forums. i need this info myself, so if i come across it i will get it to you. i knw it involves drilling a hole into your distributor cap and using an old spark plug.

katana, msd part number for the tower add on to convert the distributor is 8803. i belive, im not sure yet i still have to break out the old multi meter, if i splice into the green and black wires on the two wire plug going into the distributor, i should be able to connect that to power the new external coil. this is all in theory of course.
