fixing gas tank door

does anyone know how exactly the gas tank door works? the lever that pops it open doesn't pop it open but still pops the trunk open. when i push down on it i can hear it trying to open it but it doesn't. i have to push on the side where the hinge is to get it to open. the door isn't flush with the body as in the side where the hinge is at stick out a little bit and the other side near the white release thing is in a little bit if that helps.

pull carpet off of the left rear side of the trunk check the cable

but since my gas tank door is sitting funny i'm thinking its something on the door or the hinge. I wish i knew exactly how the door works because then i can fix it.

mine did this too. i had to take my shoe off and jam the lever down while i got out and pushed the door open. u just gotta get the door open and look at how it opens and closes. then take the two philips screws out and bend the hinge with some pliers or something to make it fit again. dont bend the door though. its kind of a trial and error method but it worked. took me bout 45 min to get it right. havent had a prob since.

i'll try it tomorrow. i wonder how it got that way but then again it started doing this when it was my moms car so theres no telling what happened

ha, only took me twenty minutes. i still got to do some adjustments because the gap between the side of the door with the hinge still looks pretty big compared to the ones on other sentras. I'm hoping when i replace the bottom rubber snubber thingy the door will sit right since it still looks a little pushed in. All i had to do was make that black piece on the gas tank door curve in more and bend the piece that the white release thingy hooks into out. only thing is that you can easily pop open the door just by pressing your thumb on the side of the door that has the hinge with very little effort . is it supposed to be like this?
