Knock sensor question

I have a GA15DE with a knock sensor fitted. On these engines, if the timing is too far advanced, do you generally hear 'pinking / pinging' before the knock sensor cuts in, or does it detect it before it becomes audible..

I've heard pinking on this engine before, when the distributor had a severe problem! But I wonder, if I used the old fashioned timing method of advance the timing until it starts to pink, would I ever hear it?

Where are you located ?
I don't know, but would think thats not wise. people have holed pistons doing that ( a friends vauxhall viva comes to mind).
Set the timing with the ECU in timing mode per instructions, 10 degree max with regular and 15 deg max with premium only fuel.
