Exclamation is it ok to do a transmission flush?

hey guys,
my tranny is really acting up badly. my friends dad told me he had a similar problem in one of his old cars, many advised him that he shouldnt change the fluid becuase it was too late, but he did it anyway and it fixed the problem. i have a 1995 200sx with 103,500 miles on it. im the second owned and do not know if the previous owned ever did a flush before. is it ok to do it? how do you do it? just spill the old fluid out and pour new in? help!!!

Do you have a 5 speed or auto? What kind of stuff is the transmission doing? If it is auto, when you pull the dipstick does it smell like something was burning?

if it's automatic and the fluid smells burnt and is very dark in color, a fluid change will eventually cause it to slip and would require a rebuild. if it's still fairly red and not burnt, then a fluid change might be still a good idea.
newer fluids have high detergent levels and would clean off what is pretty much sealing the transmission clutches and valve body.
