Ok, so i just had a ball joint replaced and noticed the boot is torn on the driver's side driveshaft. How bad is it to drive like this? The car runs smooth, no noises or vibrations. I have a 600 mile road trip next week so i need to get it done fast if it really needs it so how long of a job would this be? otherwise i'll probably get it done the week after the trip. Thanks

You should be fine through the end of summer...just get it done b4 winter (CV bearing grease and rock salt don't mix too well)
As for your 600mi roadtrip...just don't make any hard starts/stops and you'll be fine.

but as with any road trip, i would make sure the car is in tip-top shape. You can't afford to break down when you're 400 miles from home. Know what i mean?
you can do the job in a day yourself, the axle is $80 (plus a $30 core which you get back). You'll need some tranny oil (type and capacity depends on you transmission and engine), and some special tools (big ass socket for the axle nut).
I would estimate that it would be about $200 at a mechanic; about $100 for parts and $100 for labor (should only be an hour).
Well i just got home from driving and now there is a serious pull to the left, before the bj was replaced it was pulling to the right. Could this be the other ball joint or would the axle effect this? i just had both front tires replaced and warranty doesn't cover uneven wear so i would like to diagnosis this before one of them wear badly....
ok well since i can't edit the above post....There is a pull but it isn't constant. Sometimes it pulls other times it doesn't. it seemed like it pulled only after i would turn left then go straight, and turning right would stop the pull when i go straight afterwards. I'm probably just gonna do the joint and axle together just to make sure.

The axle isnt going to cause a pull. The axle is fine to drive on until you hear clicking noises in a strait line. You'll start to hear clicking noises when turning, that's the start of bearing wear. You cant reboot it because it's already torn and there's shit in the bearing.
it's easier to just replace the axle. if you pay someone to do it, you will come out about the same replacing the whole axle as you would just replacing the joint. oh yeah, you will also get grease all over your rim inside and outside and also under your car if you do not replace it soon.

which makes working on the car a really nasty experience.
i had at tear in my boot i knew about it and still drove about 2 months laster i pulled out of my driveway and the car just coasted and it was sliping the bearings popped out of the cv joint and i couldnt go any where so i recommend changing them as soon as possible unless you enjoy getting towed. a few weeks before it went out there was alot of clicking noises when i turned. so once you hear that IT IS TIME.

I went 6 months on mine. I bought the axle in january but didn't get around to putting it in til july!.
my boot was torn also and i didnt think it was going to be a problem. i know it was gonna get grease everywhere. but about two weeks later i started hearing a clicking(it was the cv joint) all the grease came out and the bearing fell apart. good think it happend pulling out of my driveway. i had to push the car back in the garage to replace the whole cv axle. it ran me about $70 to replace it myself.
