the SE-R has disk brakes in the rear, I have a GXE which has drum breaks. I figured the axle would be different.
What does that have to do with an axle? The rear, unless linked by a solid rear bar, which I'd struggle to call an axle, wouldnt have an axle unless it's rear drive. Obviously, nissan sentras are not rear wheel drive machines.
b/c we have called it a freakin rear axle since i've been on this forum. even when we talk about wheels at work we call them axles for the ones that don't have power and the ones that do we call drive axles

Yes, a beam axle.
I looked at doing this by replacing the axle and found that a lot of wrecking yards sell the axle minus the disc brakes, making the whole thing much more expensive.
I finally found an axle complete in OK for $150 but without hand brake ( e- brake) cables.
Wimped out and brought the fast brakes set up from a forum member complete off a wrecked car.

Yea, I took a look under my car while on a lift today at work and I see what you're talking about. Looks like nissan designers took a trip the the garbage can and picked that up and walked it over to manufacturing for casting. Honestly, it looks like that 'axle' took about a good 30...maybe 40 seconds to design.
that piece of garbage you are referring to handles as well as the independant rear of the b13 though. don't know if that speaks to the good design of the multi link beam or what
