Specifics: 95 200SX, approximately 200K miles, performed engine swap 15K miles ago with a new clutch.
Just started doing this today. While driving down the road, the transmission will disengage itself on a sporadic basis when in 5th gear. Usually there will be one or two quick shudders prior to disengaging. But when engaged, the engine and tranny pull strong. No problems with gears 1-4 (yet).
The car sees a lot of highway miles, so 5th gear has seen extensive use. No other symptoms or problems have shown themselves. The car runs nice and strong until it kicks out of 5th gear.
Does it sound like the transmission is going, or might there be some other problem? As noted above, a new clutch and cable was installed with an engine swap 15K miles ago. The transmission is the original unit (I bought the car new).
Hmmm....was not aware of this. Thanks for the replys.
A search for "5th gear pop out" didn't reveal to much, except that the problem was fairly common in the B13s and not so common among the B14s. I noticed that there is evidently a kit that could cure the problem, but as my tranny has 200K on it, I'm wondering if it might be better just to get a low mileage replacement from the yard. Anyone know what this kit does?
Are all the b14 5-speed trannys interchangebale for the 1.6L engines? Is there a particular year in which Nissan seemed to have solved the problem in the B14 transmissions?
The 5th gear pop out kit fixes the 5th gear along with the synchronizers. The original 5th gear wore down because of the way it was designed. The newer one is designed differently (and I think the material is different, if not stronger? not sure)
B14 trannys should be interchangable with the B13 ones. But there might be sensor issues I am unaware of. I think Nissan did solve the 5th gear popout problem with the B14.

It sounds like your transmission is going out.I had the same problem. It started popping out my 5th gear and then it finally went out.I think you should get it checked out first to make sure.
