Heavy Fluttering...what is it?

After I got off the tollway this morning I noticed a fluttering sound, except that it was a heavy thudding type fluttering. It seemed to only do it around 50+ mph not at slower speeds. I stopped and checked the oil (been leaking oil for a long while now..think it's the head gasket) but it was only down a quart.

Husband thinks it may be the drive shaft. Any ideas?

P.S. To clarify it's not a loud metallic sound like when the engine is about out of oil. It's more of a loud but lower pitched thud-thud-thud-thud, quick and constant. Starts when I reach about 50 mph and continues as I stay at that speed or higher.

I also noted that it's easier to hear the sound when the windows are closed vs open.

Ironic, I just came in from the garage after changing the passenger-side CV axle on my Sr20 B14. The sound I had going was also a thud-thud. The frequency increases with the speed of the vehicle. It also made a wonderful Klunk everytime I turned the wheel.
