The check engine light has come on and won't shut off. I have recently installed a cold air intake into my 98 sentra. After installation the check engine light has come on. I thought it was on due to the fact that the O2 sensor wouldn't reach far enough to the intake so i left it off. Now, after extending the wires on the sensor and connecting it to my intake, the check engine light remains on....
Any ideas to how I have screwed my engine up would be helpful or is there something else i have missed?
O2 sensor? There is only an O2 sensor on the exhaust manifold, it should be nowhere near your intake. There is a IAT sensor, an intake air temperature sensor that is after the filter. Make sure its secure. If you see a huge decrease in gas mileage though, then there are other problems that need to be addressed.
did you disconnect the battery when putting your intake in ?
If not, disconnect your battery and leave disconnected for a good 30 minutes...then reconnect.
And to clarify - disconnect = disconnecting both positive and negative terminals.
When you reconnect everything, and start her up ....if the code is still there, it might fall off after a few minutes.....if its still on in a day or so .... I would suggest finding out what code its throwing. By either using a OBDll scanner and/or doing it manually ....check the sticky on how to do that.
Yeah, my knowledge of this is very little at best. It is the IAT I am talking about. I used just plain old speaker wire to extend the IAT also but that shouldn't have an effect. And i did disconnect the battery, but was connected when i finally extended the IAT and connect that to the intake.

Since you extended the wires after you blew the code, your going to have to disconnect the battery again like stunt said to clear it.
Hopefully you saudered (spelling?) the wires and didnt use butt connecters.
just a word of thumb if u dont have a soldering iorn u should get one caz really if u cut a wire / w.e u should solder it not just do the twist thing and electrical tape it but it sounds almost like u forgot to put the lower sensor back into the intake (the one right by the battery) b/c that will trip a code if it doesnt sense any air passing by it.
The sensor by the battery is the on that I couldn't get to originally fit on the intake because it didn't reach far enough. The gauge of the wire I used to extend the sensor is slightly smaller than the sensor's wires. No, I have not soldered the wires yet(engine light should go out whether soldered or not correct?) I have disconnected battery for 30 min and reconnected and that didn't solve the problem. I have also disconnected battery and pressed on brakes and that hasn't worked. I've checked to make sure sensor is in the intake correctly. The next thing I'm going to do is find out the error code it is giving me.
This is what I've done thus far. If I did something wrong or missed something else please let me know, I am trying all suggestions here.
After checking the code and if I read it correctly. It gave me an error code of 55. After checking this there is nothing that matches the error codes on the website. Now what do i do?

ASxa86, the reason ur CEL(check engine light) is on is b/c you disconnected the air intake temp sensor(if its a 98, it SHOULD b like a little plug w/ a point at the end) and started the car w/o it being plugged in. If you're that impatient, you COULD disconnect the battery and let it sit, although I personally would not reccomend it if your knowlege of cars is limited. All you have to to is plug the sensor back in. Thats it. What you need to understand is that the light won't go off instantly, it does take a few times of turning off and on. The computer pretty much has to reset itself, and it isn't something that happens right when you plug it in. If after, I'd say a week tops(depending on how much u drive) the CEL is still on, then its something else. But i personally did the same thing u did, and i disconnected the battery, but that didn't work, and somehow the next day my alternator blew out, so just plug it in and drive like normal, it should go off if thats all the problem was. Also, i'm no wiring expert, but you should not have had to extend the wire on this sensor. I have a 98 also and i didn't have to, you just need to line up where it will fit, then drill ur intake, and make sure its tight and secure w/ a grommit or gasket, whatever u can get to fit, then you should have no problems!
I messed with the ECU and after i got everything hooked back up, the CEL went out. I guess the reason I had to extend mine was because the website I purchased my intake from said it would fit 1.6L and 2.0L engines. The instructions they gave me said it would only fit 2.0L engines. I am using the original intake hose near the engine but the cold air intake pipe for the placement behind the battery. But, everything is working fine now, as far as i know anyway. Thanx for the suggestions everyone.
