Please help answer my concern

My best friend has gone through 3 SR20DE engines in the last 6 months. He broke all 3 by downshifting at high speeds. Now hes upset and no longer wants a Nissan and thinks that there unreliable. He said he has never had this problem with any other cars.I would feel the same way if I was him,but I also run my car and never have any problems. He has had real bad motor mounts the whole time during the last 3 engines.Based on this fact I believe this might be the reason why.(correct me if im wrong).

Downshifting is cheating, but nevertheless, when he did it, what did his RPMs go to. Probably over revved and threw a rod. It will happen to any engine, not just the SR.

So you dont think that the mounts had anything to do with it!

Really don't know, but I do know that if a engine redlines at 6000RPM, and you downshift at high speed, high enough to cause the engine to turn, say, 8000RPM, then you #1-No longer have an engine #2-Don't know how to drive, because #3-you are not very smart.

I'm sure your friend was racing when he blew his motors, explaining why he downshifted, and he probably wasn't familiar with the performance of his motor. I know at what RPM my engine runs ant what speed and in what gear, so if I do decide to downshift, I know what gear I can safely go into by what speed I am going.

^^I whole-heartedly agree.

1st time: accident
2nd time: didn't pay attention the first time (idiot)
3rd time: total freakin' moron

And if I had to guess, the second and third engines were rebuilds. If he didn't break them in before running 'em hard, then that's the reason they failed. Oh, yeah, and you ALWAYS replace bad mounts when you pull the engine.

yea my friend did an engine swap and he didnt replace the motor mounts and after like a week of driving it the screws that held the engine to the frame came loose and the engine bottomed out going at like 50mph it was not fun

Aside from the fact that he blew 3 engines, I dont think he should be aloud to drive or own any car if he isn't smart enough to change the mounts if he knew they were bad.... not to mention the common sense needed to make sure everything is tight before you drive it!

So what would u say is a safe rpm I dont want this to happen to me.I agree with all of you I drive my car hard and it runs fine.I always shift at redline and never go over.I think this is the best way to shift. What do you think??

I dont have a tach (yet) so i go by speed. But lets say you can take oh....3rd gear for example. If it redlines at 70mph, i personally wouldn't shift from 4th to 3rd unless i was at a speed of 62mph or less. This isnt like a rule or anything im just saying, that using proper judgement, you should be able to figure it out. It should be easier to figure out if you have a tach. My advice would be try shifting to a lower gear at lower rpms and see where it lands you, if you still have plunty of headroom left you mabye able to do it at a higher RPM.

I don't know what the RPMs are like in the Sentra, as I've never had one. Really it's something you just have to look at and judge for yourself. You should NEVER exceed redline. Shifting at redline is OK, I did it in my Altima and I do it in my 350z, just not all the time. Like bryce said, it's something you have to get familiar with on your own, you need to know the limits of your car, not by what people say, but by learning yourself, slowly. Use low RPMs and experiment downshifting to see where it puts you.

Bingo. I don't like to downshift at high speeds, but every once in a while some jackass will swerve to miss a slower car in front of me and I'll be hard on the brakes and downshifting like mad to keep from hitting the guy. But I'm comfortable enough now (after driving for 12+ yrs) that I can downshift safely and not worry about it. All your friend needs is a little time, practice, and to slow down just a bit. In my opinion there's no reason to be in such a hurry that you blow the engine downshifting.
