I have to replace the starter on my Sentra, which unfortunatly is located under the intake manifold. I read through the posts on the difficulty of replacing it.
I know there are two mounting bolts to remove the starter housing, but I can only see one of them which is located near the intake manifold brackets. Where is the second one located, is it between the solenoid and the motor? If so, thats going to be near impossible to remove. Can that bolt be removed through the passanger's side wheel well or somewhere else?
Is it required to remove the intake manifold brackets to remove the starter?
Since it's your first time pulling the starter I'd suggest removing the battery and the intake housing both. With those out of your way it's sooooo much easier to see the bolts needing removed (not to mention easier to reach with common tools).

Thanks for the advice. One final question for component clearity, I assume when you mention "intake housing" you are referring to the everything from the air fileter housing to the throttle body to be removed, am I correct?
Thanks
Frank

Yes I believe this is what he means.
Also be aware that some Sentra Starters have one of the two attachment bolts one way and one the other.
I dont remember which one is like this sorry...
If you have the starter under the intake (Auto 1.6 and SR I believe,) the brace is in the way and difficult to remove. I found that the best way is to remove the electrical wiring from starter and the clip from the brace, slide clip towards passenger wheel, and loosen all the way but leave on the top passenger side nut on the stud.
remove the rest of the nuts and bolts.
There are other threads on this as its a PITA !!

You mean to tell me that the starter can have both mounting bolts face opposite directions. So that tells me the flange holes are tapped. Thats poor machine design practice

Yes thats right, I have a GXE 1.6 and daughter has SER, both manual.
I have replaced the SER starter several times and ran across this when I was reading up on the issue.
So If you cant find the second bolt look for it on the other side....I dont remember how the bolts went, the problem was that intake manifold brace.
Good Luck.....

Thats bad design practice in my opinion. When two flanges are threaded and fastened together the bolt will never be under tension, so they'll vibrate loose over time. The only solution is to apply thread lock. I'll get off my soap box now. Thanks for all the advice and when I have some time I'll try the reccomendations.

I believe each bolt has only one threaded flange, just each flange has only one.

Well good luck with the intake brace.
Okay some updates and some questions. I took off the air intake duct work (great idea BTW) and I removed the bolt that secures the ground cable and I assume its also secures the starter as well? I see the intake braket(s) is it required to remove both brackets if not then which one would be recommended to remove.

The one i did the bracket is one piece, it splits into 2 at the intake, but it is one piece down by the Drive shaft.
I had to loosen this and disconnect at the bottom to get the starter out. This was the 2.0 SER so yours might be easier.
Watch out for the solenoid wire, slide it off the bracket towards the passenger wheel.
Good luck....
