Im going to be looking at a 97 Ga16 for my brother. I heard from Blair that pretty much any non american auto tranny is pretty much junk after so many miles. I wanna know from you owners of Auto Ga16s and more specifically B14 ga16 owners. Are your auto trannys reliable? How many miles are on yours? Does it shift pretty solid in between gears still? Thanks guys.

morons like this start threads all the time. They probably want a 240sx because its what is hot right now instead of a honda civic and wants to drift in a shopping parking lot...dumb and unsafe.guys like this can't handle the power of a vehicle and want the numbers for bragging rights, only to find themselves wrapped around a tree.
American trannies are 10x worse than import trannies.. especially fords. Many people have gone 200k with no problems.. its all in maintaining things properly

I agree with psuLemon... its all in how well the transmissions been maintained.
With proper maintenance could get you 200k miles +.
If you’re shopping for used cars be sure to smell the trans fluid in each one.
Burnt acrid smell or dark color means the transmission been neglected.
Also look for things like jerkyness during gear shifts or delay in shifts.
More less proper fluid maintenance is all the auto trans really needs to stay healthy.
So be prepared to swap fluids immediately after purchasing the car.
BTW, both my auto transmissions have 122k miles and are going strong!

I'd simply point out this isn't generally a fair comparison. Most people when they talk American cars mean/visualize a family sedan sized car. With imports, it's a smaller econocar. Torque is what an automatic tranny is transfering and handling. The more torque, the harder it is on the transmission.
My two highish mileage cars are the '97 Regal with 145,000 miles, and the 200SX with 175,000 miles. Both auto trannies are still doing fine. But I'd reasonably expect based on use and load that the Regal's would go out first. The transmission has to handle almost 3 times the amount of torque from the engine that the 200SX's tranny has to handle. Not to mention the car is physically heavier as well. The 200SX's tranny could be weaker and still should last longer.
But on the original point, just as a reference, my 200SX has 175,000 miles and the auto performs fine. The shifts are sort of firm but they have always been that way. I've simply changed the fluid every 50k miles.
