Hi I am new. I have a 1997 Nissan Sentra GXE and I had a problem last year when the check engine light was on and I went to the dealer and they told me it had something to do with the fuel cap. So, I got that fixed and that seemed to fix the problem. But a couple weeks ago my check engine light came on and I got nervous and pulled over. I was overdue for an oil change by a few weeks and the funny thing that happened was when I put a quart of oil in the light went off the next day and then that weekend I got the oil change and (knock on wood) the light didn't come back on. And my question is this, could the check engine light really have come on to possibly warn me about my oil being low or to get an oil change or is this just some weird coincidence or is there possibly something even bigger wrong with it? If anyone one has any information about this I would appreciate it. I tried looking to see if this happened to anyone else on here, but couldn't find anything related. I apologize if this is a repeat post.
thanks.

The error code is still stored in your car's computer (ECU) even if the light went off. Go to any car parts store... Autozone,etc... and ask them to retrieve the codes for you, tell them you got a Check Engine Light that goes on and off. Usually that's free of charge. You could write these errors down and post them here.
