3rd gear popout - 89 sentra

I have a 89 nissan sentra 2-door. Great car. Had it since it was new.
I have almost 300K on it. No, not the original engine. Had the original engine rebuilt, lost a cylinder and put a 90 engine in it. Still runs strong. Just recently it started popping out of third gear (4 speed tranny). Seems to get progressively worse - popping out of 3rd. Anyone have any ideas? Is there any bushings that I might replace, or would it be a internal issue? Before I dig into it deep just thought I would ask. If it is merely a internal issue, I'm sure I can find another transmission at a junk yard and swap it out. Which brings me to another question. Is it possible to swap in a 5 speed (bolt on) or just stick with the original 4 speed to keep it simple.

Any replies appreciated.

Thanks,

Ken

Check your fluid, might be low. That's about all I know to do, since I'm not a tranny expert.

If your car's a GA16DE sentra, then I know for sure that yes, a 5 speed GA16DE tranny will work.

In that case I think a 5 speed GA16DE tranny will work, with some minor modifications to a mount. I saw a post on here a while back about a guy who bought a GA16DE tranny and mated it to his GA16i with no problem, just had to do some cutting of a mount... try searching for it?

After doing some more searching it seems like a 5speed out of a GA16DE will work fine assuming the speedo matches up right (mech vs electronic). Now the trick is, what does that tranny come out of?

Thanks,

You're in the wrong forum, head over to the B12 section. Yes, the GA16DE 5-speed will fit the GA16i engine with no problems.

YOUR 3RD GEAR IS "POPPING" OUT OF GEAR BECAUSE THE CLUTCHING TEETH ON THAT GEAR ARE WORN. MORE THAN LIKELY YOU CRUISE AROUND W/ YOUR HAND ON THE SHIFTER AND IT WORE THE TEETH OUT. DON'T FEEL BAD I HAD TO LEARN THIS THE HARD WAY TOO! THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS EITHER HOLD THE SHIFTER IN THIRD WHILE YOU NEED IT THERE, REPLACE THIRD GEAR ( THE GEAR COMES W/ CLUTCHING TEETH ON IT) OR REPLACE THE TRANSAXEL.

Well it's fine to rest your hand on it, just make sure you just dont put pressure on it.

Well, I normally pull back on the shift knob just enough so it doen't come out of gear, just enough so that I can hear the grinding. I do that about 4 hours a day running about 75 or so. I also like to keep the clutch pressed about half way while doing it...

J/K-I do occasionally rest my hand on the shift knob, but I never put any pressure on it in any direction, so I guess I haven't hurt anything

Yeah, i doubt any damage was done. If just resting your hand on the knob is bad, then my T5 in my T/A would have wrecked itself a long time ago as they are notoriously weak transmissions.
