Timing

I did a head swap on my 96 gxe. It starts and im trying to time it. What mark on the pulley is the pin sopposed to be pointing at. I assumed it was the second one from the left because thats what it points at at TDC. But as i rotate my distributor towards that mark the idle gets lower. Could it be timing chain? or what mark should i be trying to get to?

Get the two out side pistons on TDC with out the timing chain connected. Then set the cams to its timming which is when the intake valves open then get the chain on it.

8 degrees + or - 2 is the factory spec. for timing. The first mark (towards the firewall) is -5 degrees, it goes up from 5 degree increments from there. Idle is based on timing, so adjust the timing and also adjust the idle once the timing is set.
