Hi, this is my first post.
I have a 98 sentra. everything is great except when i want to put fuel into it. I have to pump extremely slowly or else the gas pump clicks off the handle as if its full. This has been happening for a few months and is getting worse. It doesn't matter how the fuel pump handle is held or positioned. I am told is has something to do with a 'breather valve' but an internet search on that topic has left me empty. is there something i can do? can a mechanic fix or replace something and is it expensive?
I had that problem on my 98 GXE. Took forever to fill the tank. I am not sure why it did that. I thought maybe there was something lodged in there, but never figured it out. I just got used to waiting 15 min to fill the tank.
I'm interested myself to hear of a solution to this problem.

Try going to another gas station. It the pump nozzles, not the car.
I work at a gas station.. its not the pump nozzle, its the car. Its not sitting right or its something odd with the car where it senses gas fumes and air or some crap... The holes on the end of the nuzzle is what senses it. Most times or not its sitting wrong, but Ive had someone take there car to Three different pumps and it was doing it, most cars never had a problem on these pumps.
Sorry to say I dont know what it could be. Maybe the tube that lets out fumes from the tank is blocked? If Im thinking right.. how the thing works is typically fumes go out of your tank by a extra tube coming from it, it keeps the tank from building up preasure. But when youre fulling up, since it starts going back up the fill pipe the fumes go back up that since there is no where else to go and causes the pump to shut off. Thats how it should work NORMALLY. But if the tube that lets out preasure is blocked the only other place is back out the fill tube.
he's right its the car not the pump. its a fualty evap pressure sensor. is the a mil light on? my mothers 98 gxe did the same thing but through a check engine light. i removed the sensor and cleaned it out as well as the hoses to and from it and reinstalled it. problem gone. i think is code 0704 and 0215. but don't quote me. thats from memory.
The last time I saw the tube.. I was under a car on a lift, it just follows your fill tube all the way up from the tank. Check to see if you can find yours and if you can clean it.. of course only do it with a empty tank and make sure there is no preasure (take off the filler cap) in the tank before doing anything like that. Or see a friend or mechanic that could do it cheap or free.
Edit - Er.. yeah. just to be Positive, youve tried numorious other pumps and stations, right? Sometimes people arent so careful and will bash up a pump, which could cause such problems. But if its happen at different pumps and stations.. defenitly the car.

hi, what is the 'a mil light'? i do have the 'check engine' light on--come to think of it, its been on for about the same length of time as i've had this problem but i never thought they were related since i didn't think of that as the 'engine'.
its definately the car--i've tried this on many many different pumps--problem occurs on all of them, some more extremely than others.
