Would a cold air intake be good for everyday use? The reason that I am asking is because since the intake (filter) sits so low; what if u are driving while it is raining and you hit a puddle (that u can't avoid). Wouldn't the intake suck in water, and couldn't that ruin the engine in some way?
I have also heard of a bypass valve that will prevent the water from going into the intake manifold. I do not know if this is true or not; I just heard it from a friend.
do some reseach cuz this has been discussed several times.
but i will help out anyway. Since air has more density than water, it will always suck up the air before the water. You will have to completely submerge the filter in water (which is about 2' of water). Trust me, i have a CAI and i have driven in 1.5' -2' of water without a problem.. You dont need a bypass valve. its a waste of 50 dollars. i have had a cai for 4 years without a problem.. usually the ones that have the problem are the retards driving through a river or tryin to run at WOT through 3' of water.

if you are that worried, dont buy a CAI, buy a short ram. or during the rainy season, convert the cai to a wai. You really have to submerged the whole filter, its the laws of physics... due a search in this section and in the N/A section, you will see the same info i am posting right now.

psulemon has a point though, odds are, unless you live on an island and drive underwated to land once in a while... it just wont happen
my point its, thousands of people have CAI's and i bet less then 1% are stupid enough to drive through 3' of stagnent water. Its called smart driving. Your intake is really not that close to the ground and considering you have to submerge the filter, its extremely unlikley to happen. If if its really that deep and you drive through it.. its not only gonna get i the intake, the water will get other places.

there is no rule stating that you have to search, its just recommended. He is new, so i take it easy.. Now if he was a member like you for a while, i would say, do you know how to use the search button.

My question is how many 3' deep puddles are there in Texas?
you'd be surprised at how many people hydrolock their engine when it rains hard over here, even with the stock intake piping. and with a CAI, the risk gets higher.

if that happpens thats called stupid driving. I understan that it cant always be prevented as my mom did it cuz a river over flowed, but a person justhas to know their limits. if you see a lot of moving water goin across a road, you might not want to go through it. Hell even with a bypass valve the possibility of hydrolocking your car is still there.

lol, you'd be surprised at how dumb some BMW owners are. it may be the ultimate driving machine, not a submarine.
Personally.. the search doesnt always help (though with something like this Im sure its easy to find a answer with) but it is also nice to have it replyed too. Because Eventually, with everyone saying "USE THE SEARCH!" the only thing you will find with searches is everyone bitching to use the search.
And yeah I was wondering too because my friends and I are going to install a CAI using PVC Piping. He had a real CAI in his 2002 Sentra and it had a bypass.. it basically looked like a foam ring around the tube. I was wondering if you REALLY needed such a thing, even with a filter on the end of it.
