Angry Can someone please tell me if this is correct????

I want to know if this is even possible.....because I think something is really fishy. My friend dropped the keys off at the mechanic for my car.....they said it is definitely the alternator.....its $245 for the new alternator.....they also said that the alternator killed the battery in my car.....which will cost another $90. Is this even possible that this could happen? Honestly, I dont have much of a choice.....my car needs to be fixed....and it is stuck in Staten Island-about 40 miles away from my house. I'm really fucking pissed....this does not include the cost of the labor which is another $110. I do not have the fucking money to be doling out for this shit....and somehow I really feel like I'm being ripped off-so can anyone tell me if this is correct?

if your alternator goes out it will kill your battery and 90$ isent to much for a battery but 245$ for an alternator is insane, way to much

Yo man, I was going to go off on you dropping the F-Bomb like eight times. Then I realized you were a fellow New Yorker. F-bombs are like commas to us dude! These Southerners I live with don't get it.

Anyhow, If he's putting in all new parts, then that sounds about right for the alternator. A buddy of mine put a re-built one from Autozone in his Acura Integra. Only ran him $80 - $90 after we give them the old one anyway. We helped him install it... damn thise Integras don't like to give up the alternators...

If I were you, I'd check out a local auto-parts store.... in NYC that'll be few and far betwen to find.

Find yourself a rebuilt or otherwise cheaper alternator. Bring the part to the guy... again Staten Island is a treck from NYC.. depending where you are. I guarantee you'll be hte only guy on the subway with an alternator. He should be able to put it in, and just charge you the labor... but $110 is a LOT for labor.

And yes, if your altn' craps out, you'll be running off of battery completely, and at that point you'll sap it totally.

Why in the name of god did you have to leave your car in Staten Island?

Good luck.
Zorak Out.

I was comng home from a christening that was in New Jersey....and my car broke down right before I hit the outerbridge.....if I would have had it towed to queens that alone was going to cost me $275. Yea...I hate to say it, but being a woman in this kind of situation leaves you being screwed-and not in a good way. I am lucky my friend lives in Staten Island, otherwise I wouldnt have known what else to do......

The bright side to all of this....he was able to talk the mechanic down-so now this is only costing me $370....still a lot of money, but better than the almost $500 I was originally told. And surprisingly enough, they were able to recharge the battery....this was AFTER they told me that it was completely fried and there was nothing they could do. Honestly, it's amazing how when a man calls a mechanic, it's a whole different story.....these guys just like to rip women off because they think we dont know anything.....

Anyway, they also told my friend that the antifreeze was leaking-and they think that is what caused the alternator to short out-cuz it was leaking on there. Not sure about that one either-because I know nothing about where anything is inside of the engine to see for myself (well except for the place where you check your oil, brake fluid, wiper fluid, etc) and that's about it. They replaced some hoses in there to make sure it doesnt leak again and cause the same problem......but seriously....now that this whole ordeal is over-Im going to clean up the car and put it up for sale....I'm done dealing with this bs for a car that I dont really use much anymore anyway......

Anyone wanna buy a 1997 Nissan Sentra with a new alternator & brake job (the brakes were replaced about a month ago)? hehehe

First off, I don't think you should sell the car. The Sentra is a plenty sturdy vehicle. Unless of course this particular one has been beaten to an inch of it's life.

Secondly, yes it is a shame that women aren't treated nearly as fairly by mechanics, contractors, etc etc. A friend of mine took her Ford Tarus to a garage to have it tuned up. The guy told her it woul cost her $800... Now, unless htat includes an alignment, and the timing belt replacement, I don't think it should cost that much at all.

Thirdly, I still think you ought to follow up on the option of obtaining your own alternator, and letting the guy install it for you. Or getting a friend to do the job. The fact that the guy told you the battery was totally fried out, and then was able to "trickle charge" it doesn't make him sound at all reputable.

I can understand how the coolant could leak on the alternator and potentially short it out. The radiator hose is above and slightly over from the alternator inside the engine compartment. So if the hose was cracked, it could leak on it.

Again, don't sell the car, believe it or not, an alternator going out is comparably less of a problme than what you could have had.

Oh, yea, I know....I shouldnt sell the car-I was just really upset over the whole thing on monday, but to be blunt honest, I'm moving to spain in like 7-8 months, so I actually DO have to sell it before I move. I was going to wait until like 3 months before I go, but I dont really use the car enough now to justify keeping it. I dont know-I love my little car.....it's been good except for this problem I had...at this point, having it is just a luxury though......

Oh, and ps....when I went to pick up the car-it started to rain.....I go to turn the wipers on....and those broke again-after I got them fixed by the idiot mechanic around the corner from my house $^%#$^%@%$ So I had to drive home from Staten Island-in the rain-with no wipers!!!!

Oh well. If it's moving to Spain then, yes, selling the car would be justified. My freind's Tarus has the same problem with the wipers.

On an alternative note..... HONLY SHIT HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH HAVE ANOTHER ALBUM OUT???!?!?!!?!?!
Ahem...

$90 for a battery sounds a little steep. They're only like $45-60 at Wal Mart and it should take 5 minutes labor-tops. As for the alternator, the price is just nuts. A B14 alternator shouldn't cost more than $150. Labor is about an hour if the mechanic knows how to swing a wrench. I did mine in the parking lot of an Advance auto parts in about 45 minutes, with a flashlight and basic hand tools.I wouldn't pay $110 for an hour of someone's time.

Exclamation Batt Dead?

Ummm, ok that can happen. Glad to see they tried to charge it (and it held thank you very much for trying) and that would be a nice batt for $90. Lots of things cost more in places like NY,NY;Hawaii & CA. You're supposed to have a high paying job if you live in NY, didn't anyone tell you this?
Fix it and move someplace with a lower cost of living. (just my opinion but you could probabally move your standard of living up by doing that) I would never move to or live in any of those areas if money is a prob.
(JK about the high paying job, welcome to world trade!)

No offense, but living in middle america just doesnt cut it for me....I prefer living in the blue state of NY

Once I move to spain, I can get a nice 2 bedroom flat with a terrace along the beach for $600 bucks.....not a bad deal at all
