Thumbs down My car is completely f$^%#%ed

Yea....so today, I was driving home from a christening party.....and all of a sudden, my car just completely shut down on me.....the odometer stopped, my car started slowing down-even when I was giving it gas.....the turn signals stopped working.....the airbag light kept going on and off.....the emergency flashers wouldnt work when I tried putting them on to alert people that I was having car trouble on the highway. Luckily I was able to get off the highway before I completely broke down, but I have no idea what the hell could be wrong with the car.....this is the first time I've had a MAJOR problem like this. I do not think it's the battery-because the battery in my car was just replaced like not even a year ago......The check engine light wasnt on....and none of the other lights came on either-aside from the airbag light flashing on and off.....
Anyway, any idea as to what it might be? My friend thinks it might be the alternator....my other friend said something about the ignition module? How much does something like this cost to fix? Not that it matters....I have to fix it no matter what, just want to mentally prepare myself for the debt I'm about to incur for this

Yea, but do you think that the computer would just shut the car down like that? It was the weirdest thing....and actually, pretty scary too-for the first time I feared for my life because people in Jersey drive like loonies, and my car slowing down to a complete stop the way it did.....I was so afraid someone would just slam into me from behind Especially since my emergency lights wouldnt work......I cant believe this had to happen now....this was the last thing I needed.....%&^$#^%@$^%#@$&!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like the alternator. When the alternator goes you will loose power. It'll start with stuff like the radio and then turning signals and gauges and then the air bag light will flash cuz it's not getting enough power. As for ignition module? I doubt it. From what you described it was running out of juice which is either a bad battery or a dead alternator.

Ok....then that definitely has to be it....because that is exactly what happened.....first my radio kept shutting off.....then everything else-downhill from there.....how much does that usually cost to fix? Just so I have an idea how hurt my wallet is going to be this week

Alternator equals $100, plus about $100 for installation.

If it is a battery it will be below $50 for a decent battery, or $100 for a real nice Optima Battery. That you can install yourself or have the place you bought it from (like an autozone) install it for you for free.

Yea...I cant imagine it being the battery considering the battery that's in the car now is not even a year old......could be wrong though-because since the car just shut down like that, you would think that might be the case. Thank god I was able to get the windows to close, otherwise I would have really been screwed-it's supposed to rain tomorrow

The fact that I am hung over today doesnt make the situation any better.....time to call it a day and bury myself under the covers.......

But, it is still possible that it is your ecu, in which case one can be had for under $200 used in most cases, and is fairly straight forward to install.

The ECU controls alot of things in your car, so I wouldn't put it passed it to do this.

Depends on the Mechanic, and how long it takes. That was the max figure I have seen.

does the car start now, if it does start it up, and disconnect the batter, and see if the car will run off just of the alternator, or if you have a multimeter hook it up to the battery, with everything running, stereo hazard lights, high beams, etc....shold read AROUND 14 volts....

Lightbulb Alternator?

Sounds like that's it. I would start there. Never had one go but that's what I would expect. Just dead, batt got juice (multimeter will check that for you).
Just plain dead, no crank no nothin'. $200 ain't that much, ECU definitely more than that. And intall is pricey cause they gotta mess with the pulley system and belt tension, should just get a new belt while they're screwin around puttin' in the new alternator to save labor costs later too.
Unless the ECU burnt-out and you smell electronics cookin' in the cabin or you're whole wiring harness melted (mmmm barbeeeqqqq) it's your alternator.

An alternator is not difficult to install on a B14, but it is time consuming. Takes me 30-45 minutes to put one on mine. I'd see if anyone you know is capable of doing it if you are not yourself.
